McCarthy

"I have here in my hand a list of two hundred and five [people] that were known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department."

McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves rolled.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, In a speech in Wisconsin in 1952. Quoted in R. Rovere, Senator Joe McCarthy, Ch. 1

"History will record McCarthy as one of the most aggressive and courageous fighters against Communism."

-Wisconsin State Senate resolution, May 1959

"The battle between McCarthy and his adversaries was not a simplistic confrontation between right and wrong. It was a complex struggle, with strange twists and ambiguities, and at its heart lay two very different visions of what the cold war meant and how it should be fought."

-Arthur Herman, Adjunct Professor of History at George Mason University

Whatever America hopes to bring to pass in the world must first come to pass in the heart of America.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. April 16, 1953

We seek peace, knowing that peace is the climate of freedom.

"We are going to have peace even if we have to fight for it."

"Here in America we are descended in spirit from revolutionaries and rebels --
men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine."

Accomplishment will prove to be journey, not a destination.

Look, I'd like to know what's on the other side of the moon. But I won't pay to find out!

I call upon all who love freedom to stand with us now. Together we shall achieve victory.

OWEN LATTIMORE

"I believe in my right to be wrong,
and still more in my right to be right."

Professor's comments:

There are some obvious formatting issues on this page; shoot for consistency, with differences in text style, size or highlighting used to empasize points or distinguish terms.

Another issue on this page is the lack of documentation.  If it is a quote, it should include its source, even if just the person who said it. What is better is to include who said it, as well as when, where or in what document it was found.

In terms of the content, the quotes are high quality and fairly representative.

Once again, the photo is helpful.  Having his quote immediately above or below the photo is a good move.
